At the heart of all she does is Tirthankar Mahavir’s message of love, compassion and non-violence. Sadhvi Shri Shilapiji Maharaj is a dynamic and inspiring leader, striving to make a change in the world. In 2001, she was pursuing her Ph.D. in Comparative Religions at Kings College, London when she heard about the devastating earthquake in Kutch. She left her studies immediately and rushed to this remote region to initiate the gigantic task of rehabilitation. Since then, Sadhvi Shri Shilapiji has devoted a major part of her life to helping the needy and downtrodden in Kutch.
Her Message
“I first came to Kutch in 2001 after the hear-rending earthquake that had left millions of people homeless and devastated. The tragedy was huge and instant assistance was required. We immediately initiated the task of relief and rehabilitation to alleviate their suffering. Realizing the need to reinstate education in the area and to bring the children out of the trauma, many stop-gap schools were set up by Veerayatan in the region and various vocational training centers were also initiated to empower the local people. To promote and support education at all levels, Veerayatan then established many permanent centers of learning in Kutch.
Since we wanted to support the region on a long-term basis, we felt that technical education could bring about the much-needed growth and employment for the local youth. To make the most out of the tremendous industrial development that the region of Kutch saw post-earthquake, Veerayatan began the first Pharmacy degree college of Kutch in the year 2005. Next, the colleges of Computer Applications and Business Management were initiated. And now, we are in the process of creating an outstanding Engineering College which aims at not only imparting the best of education but also aims to develop wholesome personalities of the students. The atmosphere in the college encourages independent thinking and inspires students to contribute for the betterment of the society from a very young age. The result of this is the Arpan Group started by the engineering students which is a journey for creating future responsible citizens.
The mission of Veerayatan is to empower people to enhance their talents and give back to strengthen the society. And this is what we aim for our engineering students: Be powerful and make others powerful.
